ACTIVITIES
Basse-Terre is a territory rich in history and nature, enjoy it…
Parc Botanique/DESHAIES
This 7 hectare property belonged to different owners, notably to the comedian Coluche, who bought the property in 1979 and built a house there (this one is still present but has been completely rebuilt. Today, it is rented as a gîte).
In 1985, Michel GAILLARD, nursery landscaper and friend of Coluche, was asked to maintain the property. It was he who, upon the artist’s death, bought the property in 1991. This led to the idea of creating a botanical garden there, a real challenge for this man passionate about nature. The Deshaies botanical garden opened its doors in 2001, its aim being to discover the richness of the flora of the Antilles.
Thus, it presents an impressive array of tropical flowers and plants: more than 1000 species, such as water lilies, bougainvillea, hibiscus, porcelain roses, etc. We also find a great wealth of trees such as: cheese, baobab, mapou, breadfruit, double royal palm, without forgetting the extraordinary Talipot.
There is also an aviary of lorikeets (small colorful parrots), macaws and Caribbean red flamingos. A well-stocked boutique completes the visit.

Zoo des Mamelles/BOUILLANTE
This zoo is located in the town of Bouillante, on a site of more than 2 hectares, it presents around 450 animals of 80 different species (our favorite is the red panda!).
Located near the Route de la Traversée, it takes its name from two mountains in the Guadeloupe national park, the Mamelle du Pigeon (768 m) and the Mamelle de Petit-Bourg (716 m).
This zoo is original to say the least. The numerous animal species (raccoon, monkeys, parrots, felines, etc.) are visible in enclosures set up in the heart of a lush landscape, recreating the illusion of a natural space. Thus, we take multiple suspended footbridges (optional, people sensitive to vertigo can follow the normal route traced in the forest from start to finish) which offer us a spectacular view of the animals and their environment.
In addition, the zoo is committed to protecting the environment and respecting animal welfare; it has its own care center.

La Réserve Cousteau/BOUILLANTE
It is one of the most beautiful tourist sites in Guadeloupe. Located opposite Malendure beach, in Bouillante, the Cousteau reserve is a protected maritime area, integrated into the Guadeloupe National Park. It is made up of the Pigeon islets and 1000 hectares of underwater depths, corals, multicolored fish, turtles and even wrecks (the Franjack and the Gustavia).
It was in 1959 that Commander Cousteau discovered, with his team, the beauty of the Malendure seabed and expressed the wish to have the site protected by the creation of a marine reserve.
It was in the 1980s that the site then improperly took the name “Réserve Cousteau”. A bust of Commander Cousteau was also cast in the reserve. But to discover it, you will have to dive to around 13 meters, at the Coral Garden spot.
There are a multitude of activities to do in the reserve:
– diving: there are no less than 6 diving sites, from 3 to 60 meters deep.
– it is the ideal place for a first dive, the funds being easily accessible.
– snorkeling: Malendure beach is known as the best spot for swimming with turtles.
– kayak trip

Route de la traversée/POINTE NOIRE
For almost 25 km, take this road which cuts Basse-Terre in two by the mountain. From the Baie-Mahault exit, in the east, to… Pointe Noire, in the west, the D23 crosses lush and fresh landscapes, an opportunity to discover the richness of the Guadeloupean ecosystem. The route, shaded and winding, passes close to major sites: Saut de la Lézarde (to take a dip); the Crayfish Waterfall; the Maison de la Forêt (Guadeloupe National Park) and the Bras-David trail (secure immersion in the forest); the Parc des Mamelles (see below)… The road, inaugurated in 1967, opened up the west coast of Basse-Terre. It offers some interesting views of the forest, towards the Gite des Mamelles.
Discover the beauty of the rainforest. You will see the same plants as those you have in pots at home, but in their natural state and in XXL size.
